Step-by-Step Treasure Chest-Drawing Tutorial

Treasure chests have always been shrouded in a cloud of mystery. You never know what's inside one until you open it! Have you ever wondered how to draw a nice treasure chest? I created these step-by-step instructions with simplicity in mind. Enjoy!

Step 1

Step 1

1. Draw the General Outline

Our treasure chest will have an isometric partial-side view. Draw the outline of the treasure chest. This chest sits at somewhat of an angle.

Step 2

Step 2

2. Outline the Side

Next, draw the outline for the side of the treasure chest. For now, this looks kind of like an unsliced loaf of bread.

Step 3

Step 3

3. Add the Golden Edges

Now, it's time to draw the golden edges (most fictional treasure chests have them). This makes the chest look more interesting.

Step 4

Step 4

4. Add Edges to the Center of the Chest

I have drawn the edges on the front and side of the box. Now, we are going to work on the middle!

Step 5

Step 5

5. Sketch More Details

Draw two vertical lines both at an angle: one on the side of the chest and the other where the front of the chest is.

Step 6

Step 6

6. Erase Unnecessary Lines

To make this look a little more realistic, you might want to erase the lines that are present on each corner. It looks a little awkward if they are kept in place (or at least I think they do)!

Step 7

Step 7

7. Add the Keyhole

Now, we're going to draw the spot where the keyhole should be. Its base is shaped like a rectangle or square. We're going to make it look a little more 3-D in this next step.

Step 8

Step 8

8. Add Keyhole Details

I added a bit of an edge to the base where the keyhole is located. I also drew in the keyhole.

9. Make It Realistic

Last but not least, it's time to add some more details to the treasure chest. Most of them were made of wood back in the day. Draw some lines in different locations of the chest to make it look like it was made of wood. Try not to overdo the lines, and don't draw the lines one on top of the other either. It will lose its realistic appearance if you do that!

You Did It!

If you were patient enough to read and draw through this tutorial, you should have a spiffy treasure chest on your sheet of paper. I hope you found this fun; feel free to share your experience in the comments below!
