Nearly 60 species of falcons live in various climates throughout the world. They are birds of prey like vultures but resemble to the related hawks and eagles. Falcons are known for their speed and grace. In fact, a diving peregrine falcon is the fastest animal in the world. They often nest on the sides of cliffs or tall buildings.
Falconry or hawking is a sport practiced since prehistoric times. Falcons or other raptors are raised and trained by the falconer to hunt small game. The term "falcon" is derived from the Latin word for "sickle," describing the curved shape of the falcon's claw.
Falcon characters often make appearances in cartoons and other media. One example is Hayabusa, the falcon belonging to the villainous Shan Yu in Disney's Mulan. Frightful was a peregrine falcon and the main character's companion in the novel My Side of the Mountain.

The term "falcon" also appears in media in which the actual bird does not. The Maltese Falcon is a famous noir-style detective novel and film centered around a valuable falcon statue. The Millennium Falcon is a famous fictional ship from the Star Wars franchise that "made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs."

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Falcon
1. Begin by drawing a long curved line to outline the top of the head, neck, and belly.
2. Extend another long curved line from the upper end of the first. This outlines the side of the head and the back. As it nears the end of the first line, double it back upon itself to form the bird's tail.
3. Use a series of curved lines to enclose a partial heart shape crossing the bird's body. This indicates the shape of the wing. Double the line back upon itself at the tip so that it joins the existing tail feather. Draw a long curved line along the bird's chest to enclose the edge of the far wing.
4. Detail the raptor's face, erasing as necessary. Enclose a curved teardrop shape to form the sharp beak. Draw a wavy line across it to differentiate the upper and lower portions of the bill. Draw a wavy line to form the furrowed brow. Enclose a circle beneath it, and draw a smaller circle inside the first. Shade between the two circles.
5. Draw the upper legs, erasing as necessary. For each leg, start with a long curved line. Connect it to the body with a series of short "U" shaped lines. This affords the appearance of feathers or "flags."
6. Use curved lines to draw the foot. Double the line back upon itself to form each toe. Draw a small curved triangle at the tip of each toe to indicate the claws or talons.
7. Draw the remaining foot using curved lines. Draw small curved triangles to indicate the talons.
8. Band the feet and toes with curved lines. Detail the wing with "U" shaped lines to indicate the feathers.
9. Detail the bird's feathers with small shaded ovals across its neck, chest, belly, and legs.
Color your cartoon falcon. Falcons are often dark on top with creamy bellies, displaying shades of black, brown, red, and grey. Their feet and beaks may be bright yellow. The gyrfalcon of the polar regions is almost solid white.
